Ship Steel Plate Types
Overview of ABS Steel
- The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) was established in 1862 to certify ship captains and develop standards for wooden ship building. After iron and steel began to be used in the shipbuilding industry, steel plate manufacturing specifications were standardized. In 1890, the "ABS Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels" were instituted to oversee all steel-based shipbuilding. The rules are now revised annually to keep up with the development of modern steel materials.
