How to Make a Fabric Butterfly

    • 1). Place the fabric upside down on a sheet of wax paper on a flat work surface. Place a piece of lace fabric with the textured side down.

    • 2). Cut the chenille stems or cloth-covered wire into two 5-inch and two 10-inch pieces with wire cutters. Curve each wire piece into a loop. Twist the ends three times to enclose the loop and secure it.

    • 3). Shape the two large loops into wings. Slightly pull the two small loops to widen them. Place each loop on a flat surface and bend the twisted ends of the wire up.

    • 4). Run a line of glue around the wired loop bottom while holding the twisted ends in your fingers.

    • 5). Place the glued side of the loop down onto the cloth. The twisted wired ends will be standing upright. The wired loop should be flat against the cloth. Glue the remaining wires to the fabric and let the wings dry for at least three hours.

    • 6). Draw the shape of the elongated butterfly body and round head in one section on a piece of felt. Cut the piece out of the felt with cloth shears.

    • 7). Cut the wings out of the fabric with cloth shears. The cuts must be made around the outside of the wire. Be careful to cut the fabric only.

    • 8). Place the felt body on the wax paper. Fold an artificial floral craft stamen in half for the set of antennae. Set it onto the back of the head with a dot of glue. The antennae rise above the head.

    • 9). Twist the wire ends of the two top fabric wings together. Run glue halfway down the body of the butterfly and place the two top fabric wings, front side down, on to the body.

Twist the end wires of the remaining two fabric wings together. Place the set of wings on to the butterfly body. Put an extra dot of glue at the point where the four end wires rise above the fabric. Let the fabric butterfly dry thoroughly before using it on a project.
