Is There a Way to Plug Your iPod Into a Different Computer and Not Lose All Your Songs?

    Stop Automatic Sync

    • When your iPod is attached to a new computer, the device will recognize that it is not connected to its "Home" computer. A dialogue box appears acknowledging that the computer has previously been synced with a different library--you will have three options to proceed. To save the content currently on your iPod, select "Cancel" and proceed to the iTunes library. Do not, under any circumstances, select "Erase and Sync" unless you want your iPod's contents replaced with the library on the computer. After the library opens, drag files over to the name of your iPod on the sidebar to sync individual songs.

    Separate User Accounts

    • If you will be connecting your iPod to this new computer on a regular basis, consider setting up a separate user account on your operating system. In Windows, select the "Start" button and search for "New User." Follow Window's prompts to set up a new user on the computer. You may log in to the new user account, download iTunes and maintain an iTunes library for your iPod that is separate from other users. Alternatively, drag the iTunes library from the first iTunes library to a public folder on the computer and then upload the files into the iTunes library on the new user account.

    Separate iTunes Libraries

    • Rather than create an entirely new user log in, you may also create a new iTunes library on the same log in as another person. To create a new library, hold down the "Shift" key as you open iTunes. Choose "Create Library" and then type in a name for the new library. When the new library opens, uncheck the box next to "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding to Library" in the advanced tab under "Preferences." In the future, always hold down the "Shift" key when you open iTunes and select the new library from the list. With a new library, you may utilize the automatic sync feature without risk of adding the wrong files to your device.

    Separate Playlists

    • If you don't want to create a new user account or iTunes library on your computer for each iPod, a new playlist can be created within iTunes for each device instead. Click the "+" icon in the lower left-hand corner of iTunes and create a playlist with your iPod's name on it. In the future, drag files from iTunes into that playlist to keep them organized. When you plug your iPod into the computer, drag the playlist over to the name of the iPod to update only those specific songs.
