How to Use Peel & Stick Tiles on a Rough Wood Surface
- 1). Open a tub of leveling compound and use a putty knife to spread a 1/4-inch layer over all seams and nails on the rough wooden floor. Check the entire surface of the floor with a level to identify any dips. Fill in these dips with the leveling compound as well until they are even with the remainder of the floor.
- 2). Allow the leveling compound to dry for about 30 minutes, or until it is hard to the touch. Sand the leveling compound down with a 100-grit sandpaper until the areas are smooth to the touch.
- 3). Sweep or vacuum the entire floor thoroughly to remove any sanding dust that may interfere with adhesion of the tiles.
- 4). Turn one of the tiles upside down and slide it up against the door frame. Lay an undercut saw on top of the tile and saw back and forth to cut off the bottom of the jamb so the tiles will fit. Repeat the process on each remaining door jam in the room.
- 5). Measure the width of the room using a tape measure and walk to the center point. Place a chalk snap line at the center point and stretch it across to the other side of the room. Snap the chalk line to divide the room in two. Repeat the process to form another line perpendicular to the first, thus creating four squares on the floor.
- 6). Walk to the center of the room and select a square to begin installation. Peel off the protective baking from one of the tiles and press it firmly into the corner of two of the lines. Smooth it out with your hands to remove any air bubbles.
- 7). Place another peel-and-stick tile directly next to the first one so there are no gaps between them. Continue installing tiles in one of the large marked areas before returning to the center to begin on another area.
- 8). Roll the entire floor with a rolling pin when the tiles are installed to press them firmly to the floor.
- 9). Install shoe molding along the lower edge of the wall using 1 1/2-inch finishing nails and a hammer.
