How to Grow a Dieffenbachia Plant

104 9
    • 1). Plant dieffenbachia in a 10-inch diameter pot filled with a growing medium made of two parts potting soil and one part peat moss. Keep the pot in a location that receives bright, indirect sunlight during spring, summer and fall. Place in direct sunlight during winter.

    • 2). Keep your dieffenbachia plant at a constant temperature of 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not allow the temperature to leave this range or foliage may begin to drop. Place a thermometer near the plant to easily monitor the temperature.

    • 3). Water your dieffenbachia plant twice per week during spring, summer and fall to keep the soil consistently moist. Reduce the frequency of watering to once per week during winter, when the plant is less active.

    • 4). Mist dieffenbachia two to three times per day with a spray bottle filled with lukewarm water to increase the relative humidity. Spray in the early morning so any excess moisture can evaporate before temperatures drop in the evening.

    • 5). Feed dieffenbachia once every two weeks during spring and summer using a balanced 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer. Reduce frequency to once monthly during fall and winter. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper application and dosage.

    • 6). Re-pot dieffenbachia plants into a larger container once every three years to allow room for growth. Increase the size of the pot by 3 to 4 inches, and fill with a fresh growing medium. Be careful not to damage any roots while transplanting.
