Cost to Study Medicine
- According to a 2008-2009 survey by American Association of Medical Colleges, the yearly tuition and fees at state medical schools were around $23,581 for state residents and around $43, 587 for non-resident students. Private schools were much higher at $41, 225 for residents and $42,519 for non-state residents.
- Though each school varies in price, the University of Virginia Medical School charts out average book costs for each of the student's year in medical school. The first year costs around $1,025; the second year costs around $1,139; the third year costs around $396; the fourth year costs $325.
These costs don't include any additional costs for board study materials and other supplementary materials. - Students may be required to take state board exams during their tenure in medical school. Costs are approximately $500. Other fees may include student fees, registration fees and other costs such as joining associations.
- Depending on what country the medical student decides to live in, living expenses will vary but will include such typical items as rent, utilities, food allowance and other expenses necessary for the student to sustain their livelihood during their study at medical school. University of Virginia estimates living expenses to be around $1,648 a month.
- Transportation will vary upon the location the student is attending school at. Some students choose to take public transportation and some choose to drive their own vehicles. With vehicles, students have to take into account gas and maintenance costs associated with their vehicle. Public transportation will limit itself to bus, train or other forms of public transportation.
