The Canon 7D Video Mode Overview
Canon has introduced some innovative capabilities and features through the Canon EOS 7D video mode.
Even though it does not have a full frame sensor, the EOS 7D's CMOS imaging sensor is by far larger than the sensors of most high-end professional cameras at the time of writing this article.
This in effect elevates the Canon 7D video recording capability in the SLR class camera to a new level.
For ease of video recording, Canon has incorporated an external Start/Stop switch to enable easy access to the Canon 7D video mode.
This new button takes the guesswork out of when to switch from stills to video recording.
With this button, you do not need to go through multiple menu settings to switch between the stills and video modes.
The Start/Stop switch toggles between the stills and video.
To provide consistency, autofocus in the Canon EOS video mode is factory defaulted to pressing the shutter button half way down; just like what you would do to autofocus in the still mode.
However in the Canon 7D video mode, you are also allowed to customize the Canon 7D movies mode to a rear button if you wish so via its extensive control customization facilities.
To manually control the exposure during your Canon EOS 7D video recording, Canon has built the manual control for you right in under the Canon EOS video manual mode.
To activate manual control, all you need to do is to set the camera to video recording mode and turn the Mode Dial to "M.
" Then set any aperture that's possible with your lens, any shutter speed from 1/4000th down to 1/30th or 1/60th (depending on frame rate - more in a moment), and any ISO you like from 100 through 6400.
Incorporating popular requests from feedbacks to its survey, the Canon EOS 7D became the first digital SLR to provide an adjustable video frame rates that allows the photographer using the Canon 7D video mode to easily set the following frame rates: 1920 x 1080 HD: 30 fps (actual 29.
97 fps) or 24 fps (actual 23.
976 fps); 25 fps in PAL.
The Canon 7D is also capable of high-speed 60 fps recording:
To get a slow motion effect, just play back these recordings at 30 fps.
These 60 fps video files can also be easily be edited to TV and web standard's 30 fps.
In addition to its stunning still image capabilities, the 7D when used in the Canon 7D video mode gives you excellent HD video capabilities.
If you are a video professional, you will find that the ability to video full HD 1920x1080 together with user controls for frame rates and manual exposures will provide you with unlimited creative possibilities.
