How to Change a Headlight in a PT Cruiser
- 1). Determine which headlight needs to be replaced. High-beam and low-beam lights may sit in different slots of the headlamp assembly so determining this before you attempt to install the headlight will be helpful.
- 2). Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel inwards on the side you have to replace the headlight. In other words, if you're replacing the left headlight, turn the wheel all the way to the right or vice versa for the right headlight. Turn the car off.
- 3). Approach the front wheel well of the side headlight you're changing and you will notice an access panel door. To remove this panel door will require a balance of determination and finesse. There are two lock tabs on either side. Place the small angled pry bar near the outside tab, the one closest to you and the fender and gently, but forcefully pry. You might have to work your way around the panel door a little bit after it gives some. Remain diligent and you will succeed.
- 4). Reach inside the access and locate the correct bulb you're replacing. You may need a flashlight to help you see or you could open the hood of the vehicle to allow light down through. This access hole is limited in space and a very large and muscular arm may have a problem navigating its way to the headlights. If you need to, recruit someone with a longer and or skinnier arm. If all else fails, you may need to remove the tire, but even then you're only going to get another inch or two.
- 5). Turn the bad headlight retaining cover to the left until you feel it release. Unplug the terminal end from it.
- 6). Open the package with the new headlight in it. Do not touch the glass bulb with your hand under any circumstances. The oil and alkaline in your skin will diminish the life of the bulb or damage it altogether. Place the replacement bulb into its carriage hole and turn to the right until it locks into place. Plug it in and test the light before you replace the access panel door. If it works, replace the access panel door.
