How to Paint Colors on Walls
- 1). Consider the space. Dark colors tend to make rooms appear smaller, while lighter colors open up spaces. If you are painting a room multiple colors, opt for colors that complement each other. Vastly different colors can bring a disjointed look to a room.
- 2). Sample paints. Paint a small portion of a wall with a color you like. If there are multiple colors you like, paint them on different areas of the same wall. Observe the colors over several days before determining which you like best.
- 3). Gather your paint and supplies. Higher-quality paint will lead to better results. While poor quality paint is certainly more affordable, you generally have to purchase more, since additional coats are required.
- 4). Clean the walls. Use a sponge, warm water and a mild detergent to create debris, dirt and dust from the walls. You need a clean canvas for the paint to adhere properly.
- 5). Cover the floor and furniture with drop cloths. Place a cloth over anything that you'd like to protect from the colored paint. You can use masking tape to cover wood edges and borders.
- 6). Stir the paint thoroughly and pour it into a shallow pan. Dip a paint roller into the pan and roll off excess paint along the pan's side.
- 7). Paint one wall at a time, using broad strokes. Cover the entire wall with the paint. Try to keep your application even and steady. Once you have finished one wall, move on to the next one.
- 8). Use paintbrushes in corners and along edges. The paint roller can be too large to get paint into small crevices, so opt for brushes for these areas.
- 9). Allow the paint to completely dry before applying a second coat. If your paint is high quality, a second coat may not be necessary.
