How Do Bike Rollers Work?

104 16

    Parts of a Bike Roller

    • The standard bike roller fits bikes with wheelbases from 38 inches to 42 inches. The roller drums themselves can range in size from 4.5 to 2.25, the smallest being only for the most advanced cyclists. Rollers have either alloy or poly end caps on the rollers, which add to the momentum of the ride. The alloy caps provide the best momentum, and are the most expensive. Added accessories are the Headwind fan (which adds wind resistance for the rider), the flywheel (an adjustable device to add drag to the roller and force resistance) and the Fork Stand, which will add stability for the first-time roller riders.

    Setting up and Storage

    • The rollers come as one piece of machinery. To set up your rollers and try them for the first time, you want to place them in a doorway that is free of any sharp objects. This is important, because the doorway will give you something to grab to maintain your balance if you tip from side to side when first getting used to the rollers. Set your bike on the rollers and adjust the distance between the front and back rollers to fit the spacing of the tires of your bike. Then get on and give it a try. When done, the rollers fold up to conserve space and are easily stored out of sight.
