How to Start a Mailbox Business
- 1). Determine the type of services your company will provide. Renting mailboxes to businesses and individuals is the main income for this type of business, but there are additional services you can provide your clients that will increase your company's earnings. These can include the use of fax machines, copiers and printers. Some mailbox companies also sell packing supplies.
- 2). Consider whether you want to start your business from scratch or buy a franchise. Franchising can give you instant recognition for your business and the ability to obtain ongoing support from your franchiser, but be careful: Purchasing a franchise does not guarantee success. Owning a franchise also requires franchisees to follow strict guidelines and procedures.
- 3). Research various neighborhoods to determine the best place to launch your business. The location you choose can play a key role in the amount of business your company generates. Office space is a factor, but a mailbox rental business doesn't require much floor space; 800 square feet will be sufficient. Your research should also include studying your competition and planning for economic challenges. As businesses grow, new opportunities and threats emerge, and yesterday's answers won't always suffice.
- 4). Organize your business. After securing a location, you'll need to obtain the necessary equipment and supplies to successfully manage your company. This includes establishing the prices you'll charge for mailboxes as well as determining fees for any additional services your business will provide. Decide, in advance, the operating hours and if you'll need to hire any employees. Unless you plan on working every day, you'll need at least one employee. Try to hire someone who already has experience in the mailbox business and will help your company grow.
- 5). Get the word out. Let consumers know you're out there by joining your local chamber of commerce, creating a website and passing out business cards. Consider placing an ad in your local newspaper or Yellow Pages. Marketing is critical in getting ahead and can mean the difference between failure and success.
