Students make Advent art projects as they prepare for celebrating the birth of Jesus. Teachers help them by providing various materials to make calendars and wreaths as they learn about the meaning of Christmas. Students enjoy being able to keep track of the days leading to Christmas with the projects they have made in school. - Students can create this Advent chain in class. Teachers make one copy of the chain links for each student. Children cut the strips of the chain one link at a time. After cutting the first strip, bring the two ends together to create a circle. Tape the first link together. Now, cut the second link. Put the end of link two into the circle and bring it together to make the second link, taping it together. When the chain is complete, students take their Advent chain home and hang it predominantly. Each day, they take one link from the chain to see what activity they can do to celebrate Advent.
- This project will be created before December 1. Students will need scissors, glue and one copy of the Christmas tree and ornament template to create this Advent calendar. Begin by cutting out the Christmas tree. In class on December 1, students cut out and glue on the "1" tree ornament. Students will take their Advent Tree home on this day. Each day, students will cut out and glue on an ornament onto their tree leading up to Christmas Eve.
- Students make their own paper Advent wreath to share with their families during the four weeks of Advent. Teachers may choose to print the leaves and candles in color or in black and white to have students make them the color of their choice. Students cut out the leaf template first and set it aside. Then students cut out each candle and bow. Glue on the bow. Students will take their four candles and the leaves home in a baggie for safekeeping. On each Sunday of Advent, students will glue one candle to their wreath to celebrate the season.
- Students begin this Advent calendar with a preprinted Santa Claus. On December 1st, color the calendar as desired. Santa's beard includes twenty-five circles for students to use as their calendar. When students complete their coloring, they will glue one cotton ball on the circle with a "1" on it. Students will take their Santa home to use as their Advent calendar for the season. They will take home 24 more cotton balls to use. Each day, students are to glue on one more cotton ball. On Christmas Eve, they will glue on the last cotton ball and prepare for Christmas.
