Will I Need Treatment for the Rest of My Life After Detox?

105 26
After you have completed a detox program, you may be concerned that you will need a recovery program or treatment for the rest of your life. There are many different recovery treatment and alternative programs once you have detoxified such as 12 step programs, holistic retreats and cognitive behavioral education programs. Some individuals find that after detox, they do not need to join a group and they are able to return to their life without any future drug and alcohol use, but others find that they need to be part of a support group to stay drug and alcohol free.

12 Step Programs

12 step programs are very popular with recovery drug addicts and alcoholics. They are known for their 12 steps for recovery which includes admitting that they are diseased and that they are powerless over their addiction. Other steps include self reflection, making amends with the people they have offended and in all the steps there is a direct relation to recognizing God has control over them.

12 step programs teach that the best method for success in sobriety is to abstain from drugs and alcohol and to attend 12 step meetings. Members have sponsors and they attend the meetings with sponsors. There are over 2 million 12 step program members worldwide.

On the downside, there are many groups that have a problem with the alcohol and drug abuse is a disease theory and while 12 step membership is quite large, there is also a large number, 60 - 95 percent, of the group that have either stopped attending meetings or dropped out of the group completely because they do not feel that they can be successful.

Holistic Programs

Holistic programs take the natural approach to addiction recovery. This mind, body and spirit method allows the use of yoga, meditation, vitamin therapy and acupuncture to relieve the cravings that sometimes occur during ongoing recovery. You can find holistic therapy available in outpatient services which will allow you to continue your daily routine, or you may choose to go on a holistic retreat. While these types of programs work for some individuals, they do not work for everyone.

Cognitive Behavioral Education

Cognitive behavioral education teaches that alcohol and drug abuse is a choice that you make and not a disease. Cognitive behavioral education does not believe in an alcoholic gene or a drug addict gene and so dispel the thought of addiction being inherited. Rather, cognitive behavioral education posits that your drug and alcohol abuse are learned behaviors that you have picked up from watching others use drugs and alcohol.

Cognitive behavioral education teaches individuals to use self assessment and self change to reevaluate their decisions and choices and to make choices that are more productive and to develop habits and behaviors that are positive and purposeful to their life. It does not label, judge or manipulate, but instead works to build self esteem and self confidence. According to cognitive behavioral education, you would not need treatment for the rest of your life once you learned to manage your choices, habits and behaviors.
