How to Make Fascinator Netting With a Comb
- 1). Cut a piece of Russian netting into an 18-inch square. Place the square on the work table. Fold the left side over the right and align the edges. Measure down 11 inches from the top right corner where the raw edges are aligned. Cut a notch in the netting with the scissors. Measure 3 inches from the bottom right corner to the left and notch. Cut through both layers of netting from notch to notch. Open the netting.
- 2). Thread a needle with heavy-duty thread. Bring the thread ends together and knot. Trim close to the knot.
- 3). Find the small rectangular intersection of two netting strands as close to the top right corner of the netting as possible. The netting is open so you should see a row of these intersections. Thread your needle through the intersection. Do not allow the knot to pull through. Sew a running stitch through each rectangular intersection from the right side to the left. Pull on the thread and slide the netting to the right until the netting is the width of your hair comb. Stitch back through the netting to even the gathers out and to secure your thread.
- 4). Position the hair comb with the curve of the comb downward facing. The teeth should be toward you. Apply a bead of hot glue to the hand-grip portion of the top upward face of the comb. Do not get glue on the comb teeth. Hold your netting with the gathered end upward. Line up the gathered edge along the top hand-grip edge of the comb. Press the gathered netting into the glue and hold it in place until the glue dries.
- 5). Cut white ribbon or beaded trim long enough to wrap around the netting covered hand-grip part of the comb. Apply hot glue to the top of the netting and to the underside top edge and fit the trim over the netting so that the gathered netting is hidden. Keep your trim seam to the underside part of the comb. Allow the glue to dry.
- 6). Sew the edges of the trim together. Your needle and thread should still be attached to the gathered area of the netting. If you have knotted and cut the thread, thread and knot another piece of thread. On the top edge sew the top and bottom piece of the ribbon together with an overhand stitch and pull the thread as snug as possible to close the gap. Sew even stitches across the top. Tunnel your needle through to the comb side.
- 7). Catch the bottom of the ribbon on the front side of the comb. Bring your needle between the teeth of the comb to catch the bottom of the ribbon on the back side of the comb. Sew across the comb in this way, pulling the stitches as snug as possible to create a clean appearance and hide most of the gathered netting. You may have two or three stitches going between each pair of teeth as you work your way along the bottom of the ribbon. You can add beads with your stitches to ornament the comb. Finish by pinning a vintage brooch next to the top of the comb.
