Tourette's disorder (Tourette's syndrome) is a brain disorder that causes a person to say or do things that they cannot control. These are known as vocal tics and motor tics. Although tics can disrupt learning and activities, they do not indicate a low intelligence. Tourette's may be caused by a gene, but it is unknown what that gene is. Other risk factors include low birth weight, brain injury, insufficient oxygen during birth, and more. Treatments are usually therapies and counseling used to help a Tourette's patient and his or her family deal with the tics of Tourette's and any social stigma they may face.
