Flaxseed Benefits for Men

104 43

    Reduced Blood Pressure

    • Flaxseed is an excellent source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. An international study found that people who had higher intakes of these specific fatty acids also had lower blood pressure compared to those with lower intakes of the fats. A blood pressure reduction was seen in participants with and without hypertension. The omega-3 fatty acid in flaxseed is a precursor for the fatty acid found in fish oils, called EPA. This means that in the body it is converted to EPA, which is also associated with lowering blood pressure. Therefore, it is not surprising that this study also reported that the omega-3 fatty acids from sources such as walnuts and flaxseed were as effective as those from fish, making these foods good substitutes for those who do not eat fish. In addition, another study found that flaxseed oil intake reduced blood pressure in middle-aged men with high cholesterol.

    Benefits for Certain Health Conditions

    • These same omega-3 fatty acids are also associated with reduced inflammation and formation of blood clots. This is beneficial for those with a variety of conditions and diseases. The reduction in inflammation has a positive influence on asthma, arthritis, migraines, and osteoporosis. The reduction in the formation of blood clots is especially important for patients at risk for a heart attack or stroke.

    Fiber and Digestive Health

    • Ground flaxseed or flaxseed flour is a very good source of dietary fiber. Adequate fiber intake improves blood cholesterol levels, reducing heart attack risk. In addition it helps to stabilize blood sugar, which is essential for diabetic patients. Fiber also has a positive influence on gastrointestinal health by aiding digestion and allowing food to move more efficiently through the gastrointestinal system, which reduces the exposure of colon cells to any cancer-causing substances.

    Prostate Health

    • At least one study shows that flaxseed in the ground form, which is more digestible, has a positive influence on prostate cancer. Men were given flaxseed for one month prior to surgery for prostate cancer. Some took the flaxseed alone; others combined it with a low-fat diet. Both groups saw improvement in prostate health. Researchers believe the omega-3 fatty acids play a role in the way cancer cells clump or gather together, and that the lignans, also present in flaxseed, reduce blood flow to the tumor, both resulting in the reduction of cancer growth.

    Gaining Maximum Benefit

    • Flaxseed oil is a good source for omega-3 fatty acids, but the whole flaxseed, which provides fiber, is necessary to gain the full benefit of this food. Flaxseed must be ground into a meal or flour so that it is easily digestible and the nutrients are accessible for the body to use. Buy only ground flaxseed sold in airtight packaging, and remember that once it is ground it becomes at risk for oxidation, due to the exposure of the fatty acids. Keep ground flaxseed in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator or the freezer.
