Tree stump removal processes are generally dependent on the desired removal time and the number of stumps you need to remove, according to landscape contractor Roger Cook with This Old House. Tree stump removal techniques can range from natural decay to machines that grind the stump below ground level. Burning stumps out is not an option for many U.S. residents living within city limits. Burning is only recommended if local authorities approve of such a practice. - Most stumps will naturally rot out if given time. Louisiana State University (LSU) reports that rotting stumps is the easiest, safest and cheapest tree stump removal method available. Cook states that many garden centers provide chemicals to hasten stump rotting, but warns users not to expect “lightning-fast” decomposition times. Tree stumps lacking leaves, and their photosynthetic nutrient producing properties, eventually die and begin to decay, but large stumps can take years or even decades to decompose.
- Grubbing is the most labor-intensive method of tree stump removal, according to LSU. Grubbing is the industry word for hand digging or hand removing a tree stump. Cook states that small shallow rooted trees, such as smaller pine trees, respond best to grubbing. Tools used for grubbing include shovels, axes or hatchets, root saws and various other digging and cutting utensils, depending on the application. Grubbing multiple tree stumps can become a long, painful endeavor for most homeowners.
- Many arborists--tree service providers--use expensive tree stump grinding machines. Stump grinders can grind tree stumps below ground surface levels, leaving only a hole needing topsoil fill dirt, reports LSU. Cook states that many equipment rental businesses offer stump grinders for ambitious homeowners. Stump grinding generally leaves a large pile of wood chips for homeowners to dispose of. Many tree wood chips are excellent for use as mulch, however.
