One of the most common eating disorders is probably Binge Eating Disorder (BED).
Usually, people with this disorder are above average weight to obese, however, it has to be put out there that normal weight people can also have BED.
As many as 4 million Americans (approximately 2 percent of all adults in the USA) have this disorder.
This is a staggering amount of people who have this particular eating disorder.
While BED is more common in severely obese persons, approximately 10-15% of persons who are mildly obese and trying to lose weight on their own also fall into this category.
It is common among men as well as women, however, there are more women who have this disorder and there is no partiality among races.
People who binge eat and are also obese tend to become overweight at a much younger age than those without the disorder.
Their weight tends to go up and down, or yo-yo, more often than others, which also leads them to having health issues As to causes of BED, no one knows for sure what causes it, however there are common traits among all of the eating disorders.
Up to 50% of all people with BED are either depressed at the present time or have been in the past.
Depression and anxiety are commonalities among the eating disorders.
Whether the depression is caused by the eating disorder or the disorder is caused by the depression, is not clear.
There are studies that suggest that people with BED may have problems dealing with their emotions or the stresses of their daily lives.
Being mad or sad, worried, stressed, or having strong anxieties are common among those with BED and they say that these emotions cause them to binge.
Certain emotional issues and behaviors are more common in those with BED.
These include alcohol abuse, impulsive behaviors (acting fast without thinking first), not feeling as if they are in control of themselves, not feeling like they fit in, and not talking about how they feel.
There is more research to suggest that genetics may be involved as the disorder often times occurs multiple times within a family.
