An intranet provides the business with an internal infrastructure that gives users access to local network Web services. The intranet gives departments the ability to manage documents, payroll, employee manuals and file sharing. Before implementing an intranet, the company should plan the policies for the site pages and security access. - The main purpose of a corporate intranet is distributing company information. Since an intranet is a website located on the internal network, the same rules apply for distributed documents. The intranet administrator needs to secure the Web host server and protect documents with sensitive information from being seen by all personnel. FTP servers are also an option for an internal intranets. FTP servers hold files and allow users to upload files to share with other users. Distributed documentation saves the company time and resources, and it saves money by eliminating paper files.
- An intranet server can host Web applications, so companies with the resources and programmers can set up applications that streamline company processes. For instance, users can submit payroll information, time management sheets and submit personal time off requests. This type of process requires proprietary software development, but it can save the company money in the long run. The applications require security as well, and these Web applications are also secured with user names and passwords. This protects employee human resources information from being accessed by other users on the network.
- Time management software is available out-of-the box to load onto the intranet server. This software allows employees to enter time into an application. The time is then sent to the employees' managers and other high level personnel. This allows managers and human resources to get a better idea of the time and performance for employees. It also helps the payroll department calculate the employees' total paycheck amount.
