How Do You Get a Law License in Illinois?
- 1). Submit certificates or transcripts to the Illinois Board of Admissions from the college and law school you attended.
- 2). File a character and fitness registration application with the Board of Admissions.
- 3). File a bar examination application with the Board of Admissions.
- 4). Pass the bar exam.
- 5). Pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination.
- 6). Receive a certificate of good moral character and general fitness to practice law from the Committee on Character and Fitness.
- 1). Complete the Preliminary Questionnaire (PQ) at the Illinois Board of Admissions website, file it electronically, and receive written approval from the Board.
- 2). Submit an admission on motion application to the Board of Admissions. You must have a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-approved law school; you must have been practicing law for five of the last seven years; and you must have passed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination.
- 3). Pay the $800 fee to file an application for admission on motion. The fee may either be charged on the Illinois Board of Admissions website to a Visa or MasterCard or paid by certified check, cashier's check or money order made payable to the Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar. A $15 convenience fee will be added to each credit card payment.
