Christmas Ornament Decorating Ideas

    Glitter or Paint

    • Personalize colored blown glass ornaments using white craft glue and glitter. Use the applicator tip of the glue container to write a family member or friend's name on the ornament. Sprinkle glitter on the glue-written letters and let it dry.
Use the ornaments for table favors and for the tree.

Instead of names, you can also write appropriate seasonal words or phrases such as "joy," "I believe" or "Merry Christmas."

You can also make designs instead of words, drawing glue patterns, flowers or Christmas symbols such as bells or candy canes. Cover the glue areas with glitter. Add glued-on sequins or fake craft jewels for more glamor and sparkle.

Try painting a design or words on clear glass balls using craft acrylic paints and a fine-tipped paintbrush.

Carefully remove the top of a clear glass ball ornament and pour in two or three different colors of craft acrylic paints, just enough to swirl around inside the ball. (Do not fill the ball with paint.) Swirl the ball around until the inner surface of the ball is completely coated with whirls of paint. Let the ornament dry and replace the top piece.

    Tissue Paper

    • Cut small strips, squares or other shapes of tissue paper. Use patterned tissue paper or plain colors, or mix colored and patterned pieces together on one ornament. Set each cut piece on a clear glass ornament and brush with a mix of white craft glue and water to bond the pieces to the ball and seal it. Overlap the pieces as you add them.

Use colored glass balls instead and do not completely cover the balls with the tissue. Leave spots of shiny ornament finish showing to make the ornaments sparkle in the light.

    Embroidery Thread and Yarn

    • Fill in drawn circles or squares on a colored glass ornament using white craft glue. Use embroidery thread or yarn and fill in the patterns with swirls, following the shape of the glued area until it is filled in. Add glue to the end of the thread pieces and hide the end under a wound piece already on the ball to finish it.

Free form the design in a criss-cross pattern, winding the yarn or thread all over the surface of the glass ornaments as if you were winding a ball of yarn. Leave areas of colored ball uncovered. Add fake craft jewels for more dimension and sparkle.
