Do You Know Where Your Penis Is?
The question remains as to how the body knows where the penis is in this landscape.
Most people believe there are only Six Main Senses in the body - Touch, Taste, Hearing, Vision, Balance, and Smell.
This is completely incorrect.
There are many more senses that the body has that allows it to function in its environment.
For example: Vibration, Two-Point Discrimination, Temperature, etc.
One of the sensory factors in the human being is Spatial Orientation.
This allows a person to determine their existence (positioning) in their environment.
This is mainly accomplished through receptors in the joints, muscles, and tendons that send impulses to the brain that allow a person to be able to perceive their physical presence in an environment.
This allows you to know where you are in a three-dimensional space.
For example, the police use a form of spatial orientation to decide if one is drunk or not.
It is a simple test.
With your eyes closed, touch your finger to your nose.
Most people who are drunk cannot perform this operation, as the alcohol in their system has hampered their proprioception abilities.
Proprioception is one method in which the body determines its spatial orientation.
Signals are sent from the muscles, tendons, and joints to the brain and this helps the body determine where a certain body part is in any give location at any time.
For example, this mechanism allows people to walk.
It helps decide where the lower extremities are situated during the walking process.
Then it decides which muscles to contract and which muscles to relax; and to coordinate this fully so that a person can actually walk instead of being motor-confused and falling down.
Now how does the body determine where the penis is in its three-dimensional space? If there are no joints in the penis, very few muscles, and just a handful of ligaments, then how do you sensate where your penis is at any given time? During the flaccid state there is very little sensory information being sent to the brain to allow the brain to be concerned with penis function.
This is one way how your penis doesn't signal to you every moment during the day where it is and what it's doing, as long as it is in the flaccid state.
The reticular formation also has something to do with this, as the reticular formation helps the body ignore incoming data that is not relevant at the moment.
But when a man does create an erection he is very aware of his penis and where it stands in three-dimensional space.
This is due to mechanoreceptors in the penis.
They send information to the brain on stretch and distortion allowing the brain to determine its placement in its environment.
This is mainly done through the skin of the penis which sends information (through these sensory mechanoreceptors) about vibration, pressure, stretch, and touch.
So, if a man is standing naked with an erection, we can theorize three main inputs that allow this man to realize that his penis is erect and occupying space.
That would be through stretch mechanoreceptors, ligamentous tautness through proprioceptors, and proprioception through the affected and surrounding tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.
It's a great system.
Without it, a man would not be aware if his penis existed or not.
