How to Maintain an In-Ground Swimming Pool
- 1). Inspect your pool equipment before opening your swimming pool each season. Make sure you check the pump, heater, filters, ladders and chlorinators to make sure they still work and are not damaged.
- 2). Replace the plugs that you removed when you closed your pool in the fall.
- 3). Use a pool skimmer to remove leaves and other debris from the pool.
- 4). Empty the baskets of your pump strainer and skimmer.
- 5). Allow your filters to run for a 24 hour period before you dive in or allow others to do so.
- 1). Check the pH balance of your in-ground swimming pool at least once per week using handy test strips. Typically, you'll want to keep the pH at less than 7.6 but more than 7.2. You'll want the alkalinity at about 180ppm but definitely below 440ppm.
- 2). Use a sanitizer to keep your pool water clean, suppress bacteria growth and discourage the growth of algae. Most people use chlorine for this task, which you can find in convenient stick or tablet form. Bromine is another popular sanitation choice.
- 3). Use an algaecide once per week to give yourself a leg up in the fight against algae growth.
- 4). Check the ground around your pool for chips, cracks and other types of structural damage at least once per week.
- 5). Dive in and check the structural integrity of the inside of your in-ground pool at least once per week. Have structural damage repaired right away.
- 6). Clean your pool filters periodically by soaking them in a cleaning solution and then hosing them off.
- 7). Remove organic waste on a regular basis to keep your pool water clean, clear and free of unpleasant growths.
