How to Convert a Hot Tub to a Salt Water Tub
- 1). Install a chlorine generator to the hot tub following the manufacturer's directions for the particular product. These generators can be found at any pool supply store and should come with installation instructions. If necessary, the pool supply store may be able to install the generator for a fee.
- 2). Drain the water from the hot tub using either the hot tub's drain hose or a water removal pump. Refill the hot tub with fresh water.
- 3). Add water conditioner salt to the water. For every 200 gallons of water in the hot tub, add five pounds of salt to bring the salt level to 4,000 ppm, which is a safe and comfortable level. Any pool supply store carries large bags of salt for use with chlorine generators.
- 4). Turn on the hot tub pump and allow the water to circulate for 24 hours. Test the salt level with a salt test strip. Add more salt if the level is below 4,000 ppm. On the other hand, drain an inch or two of water and replace it with fresh water if the salt level is above 5,000 ppm.
- 5). Check the hot tub's salt level every couple weeks to ensure it stays between the 4,000 and 5,000 ppm range. Add more salt as often as necessary to keep it as close to 4,000 ppm at all times.
