During the cold winter months, a “warming” facial cleanser may sound very inviting to a lot people. But, for those of us with sensitive skin, the first question that comes to mind is “How warm?” and “Will it sting?”(If you have sensitive skin, check out more product reviews for sensitive skin.)

We tried Boscia’s Detoxifying Black Cleanser because the warming aspect sounded soothing and the “black” description intrigued us.

In short, the cleanser did not sting, it was not too warm and in case you were wondering, it’s not quite black (more of a dark gray).

Boscia: Detoxifying Black Cleanser- Description

This facial cleanser comes in a 5 oz. recyclable, black plastic pump. The pump looks very basic, sleek and…serious (not “girly”). At the time of this review, the retail price was $28.

Detoxifying Black Cleanser has a nice eucalyptus smell, is a dark gray in color and the consistency is of a thin gel. Once you rub the product onto your skin, the gray color disappears and it creates a very light white lather. The cleanser is not sticky and doesn’t leave any residue feeling on your face. Also, a little goes a long way; you only need one pump of the gel to clean your entire face.

The company states that the cleanser will “effectively open and de-clog pores” and that it “minimizes the look of pores instantly and over time.” (tips to minimize the appearance of pores.) On the pump, the instructions for use read: “Gently massage cleanser onto dampened face to create a warming lather.

Rinse clean with water. Use AM and PM.”

What's the Deal with the Warmth?

Is it hot or warm? Will it be uncomfortable? These are questions we had about this product and you probably do, too. The cleanser is actually not that warm and it does not hurt.

To experience the warmness on your face, you need to directly apply the cleanser to your face (don’t rub it in your hands to create the lather first). If you do rub it into your hands first, your hands will get the warming sensation, not your face. By the time it gets to your face, the warmth will be gone. And when you do apply the cleanser directly to your face, the warmth feeling is fleeting. We thought the warming sensation would last the entire time the product was on the skin, but that didn’t happen.
There was nothing uncomfortable about the feel of the product. We liked the way it seemed to clean very thoroughly and it didn’t cause any irritation or breakouts.
Detoxifying Black Cleanser- Review

Things We Loved:
  • Cleanses Well: After using the product, your face feels very clean and refreshed.
  • It's Mild:It Doesn’t irritate, dry or hurt skin.
  • What it Doesn’t Contain: We like the fact that this cleanser doesn’t have any: Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Synthetic Dyes, Petrochemicals, Phthalate, GMOs or Triclosan.

Things We Didn't Love:
  • The Warmth Doesn’t Last: We had envisioned a warming sensation for the entire time that the product was being used on the face and that didn’t happen. There is some warmth, but not a lot.
  • It's Supposed to do What to My Pores? Even though the company states that the cleanser will minimize the look of pores, we did not have that happen. In fact, we felt the product maximized the appearance of our pores. (make your own pore strips)

Detoxifying Black Cleanser- Final Thoughts

This is a nice, basic cleanser. Is it great? No. But, it is something to try if you are curious (and a little wary) about a warming cleanser because it’s not too strong. It definitely makes your face feel good and it seems to be a good product for sensitive skin as well. There’s something about the unique color of the gel that makes you feel like you are pampering yourself with something special each time you use it. We weren't blown away with the cleanser - it was just OK.
