How to Tow a Stuck Jeep
- 1). Assess the situation. How to tow a stuck Jeep depends on where and how it has become stuck. A simple mud pit presents a significantly different situation from that created by a boulder-strewn ravine. Check for large trees or other features to use as leverage, and scour the area for another vehicle that can help.
- 2). Use another vehicle to tow the Jeep out. Connect a tow strap to the frames or tow points on both Jeeps. Do not connect the strap to the axle or other suspension parts, or extreme damage can result. Place a safety blanket across the tow strap. The blanket will absorb any energy if the strap breaks. Take up any slack with the towing vehicle. Try gradually pulling the Jeep out with both vehicles applying power. You may need to yank the other Jeep out.
- 3). Use a winch to tow your stuck Jeep. When a winch is available, you can tow the Jeep without another vehicle present. Wrap the winch cable around a strong tree, using a tree saver or extra blanket to protect it. Connect the cable to the Jeep frame or other tow point. Take up the slack. Begin winching the stuck Jeep out. Keep the safety blanket on the cable, and use gloves to prevent injury. Keep bystanders clear in case the cable snaps.
- 4). Tow the Jeep out. In the event the Jeep is disabled by getting stuck, tow the Jeep out using the tow strap until a paved road is reached. Use a tow bar if equipped. Call a properly equipped tow vehicle if not equipped for towing long distances.
