Marlena asks when the immigration hearing is. Sami reveals it’s in about half an hour and assures her that it won’t take that long. John admits he’s looking forward to coming, predicting that it could score him some points with “Blondie.” Sami tells her mom who the immigration agent is. EJ adds that Mr. Burke doesn’t have much of a sense of humor. “Well, you’re not exactly a laugh ride yourself,” remarks John to EJ.
Sami advises her mom to keep her answers short and everything will be fine. Marlena agrees to help them. Sami thanks her mom and agrees to meet them at the police station in twenty minutes. Marlena asks John if he’s coming, but he says in a minute. He takes a drink and stares at Stefano’s portrait before leaving the room. Rolf emerges and fears he’ll be in big trouble if John discovers what’s on the disk.
In a dark alley, a bloody and beaten Earl pleads for his life to Martini Vitali, insisting that he didn’t have a choice and the “Brady guy” forced it out of him. The goons grab Earl as Martino says that everyone deserves a second chance. Martino and his goons later stand over Earl’s dead body, as it appears he was shot in the head. Martino wipes blood off of his shoe before he gets a phone call. He tells his goons to “finish it up.”
Kayla, Steve, Abe, and Lexie enter Ava’s room, where Ava demands to have her restraints taken off. Lexie reveals that she’s detoxing. Kayla informs Ava that her medication was analyzed and she has the results with her.
Ava refers to this as an invasion of privacy and yells for Abe to have her arrested. Ava looks frightened as she yells for Dr. Neusbaum and pleads for her pills. Kayla informs everyone that Ava was taking an anti-seizure medication which causes mood swings and manic episodes. Steve wonders why a doctor would prescribe it. Ava believes that Dr. Neusbaum would never do anything to hurt her. Steve asks Ava if she can think of any reason why her doctor wouldn’t want her to get better. He tries to assure Ava that they are all there to help her. A tearful Ava desponds how there’s something she can’t remember, no matter how hard she tries. Lexie encourages her to relax and suggests they take a break. Ava apologizes profusely to Steve for letting him down. She begs him not to leave and cries hysterically when he exits.
Outside the room, Kayla states her intentions to help Ava recover, despite what’s happened. “It’s not just because you’re a doctor. It’s because you care about people,” states Steve. Abe tells Kayla to be reasonable after everything Ava’s done. Kayla stresses that she’s a doctor in spite of it all and wants Ava to recover. Steve agrees with Kayla, in that Ava didn’t know what she was putting in her body. Abe refers to them as a hell of a lot more forgiving than he would ever be. Kayla asks Abe to put Dr. Neusbaum on his computer and see what he comes up with. Abe agrees to see what he can do. Lexie emerges and informs them that she gave Ava something to calm her down, then requests to speak to Kayla privately. “Did you tell Steve?” questions Lexie. “No,” replies Kayla. Lexie warns her that Steve’s going to find out sooner or later and suggests it would be best if Steve heard the news from her. Steve overhears and asks Kayla what’s going on. Kayla reluctantly reveals that Ava tried to take her own life right after he left her at the altar. Steve is consumed with guilt and reaches out for Kayla, but she pulls away. He asks Lexie if he can go back inside, then asks Kayla to come in with him. They enter Ava’s room, who asks where she is. Kayla informs her that she’s at University Hospital in Salem. Steve tries to assure her that she’ll be taken care of. Ava quietly begs Steve not to leave her.
Ava later says she doesn’t feel so good. Kayla says it’s because she’s repurging the drugs from her system. Ava questions why Kayla’s being so nice to her. Kayla affirms that it’s her job and Ava’s her patient now. Ava rehashes how she did awful things to her and her friends. Steve assures her that it was because of the drugs she was taking. He thanks Kayla.
Kayla and Steve come outside Ava’s room and encounter Abe and Lexie. Steve praises Kayla, who claims she was doing what any doctor would do. Abe receives a phone call, then informs Lexie that there was a body found in the alley behind the Cheatin’ Heart. Lexie tells him to be careful.
The police are at the scene of the crime when Kate arrives and asks the cop what happened. He says they don’t know yet and asks Kate if she saw anything unusual. Kate insists she didn’t see anything. She gives another cop her cell number so they can call if they have more questions. She then receives a call from Martino, which takes her by surprise. Martino claims he’s in town for a visit and suggests they get together like the old days. Kate informs him that she gave up her old line of work a long time ago. Martino says he’s glad to hear that and insists on at least buying her a drink. A daunted Kate claims she’s pretty busy, but Martino assures her there will be no strings or no tricks. She reluctantly agrees, but wants to meet him somewhere. He suggests picking a time and place and will call her back.
Abe later arrives on the scene and instructs his men to search both ends of the alley and everything in between. Abe asks an officer to escort Kate back to her car. Lexie then phones Abe and informs him that the sitter called. Abe realizes that it’s his turn to pick up Theo. Lexie offers to call and let the sitter know that Abe will be a bit late. She asks how bad the crime scene is. Abe reveals that it’s a professional hit.
Steve re-enters Ava’s room and asks how she’s doing. A meek Ava tells him to come closer and quietly implores him to get her out of there. “Get me out of here!” she bellows. Kayla enters and tells her to take it easy. Martino Vitali then appears to see his daughter, which appears to frighten Ava. He approaches her and kisses her on the head. “I’m sorry. Who are you?” questions Kayla. He introduces himself as Martino Vitali.
