    • 1). Turn off the power to the outlet at the circuit breaker box. If you're uncertain as to which switch controls the circuit, plug a light or other device into the outlet and turn it on. Flip the switches one at a time until you find the correct one.

    • 2). Remove the screw in the center of the outlet plate with a screwdriver. Remove the two screws at the top and bottom of the outlet proper and pull the outlet out of the wall with the wires still attached.

    • 3). Unscrew the screw holding the white wire onto the switch.

    • 4). Cut a 2-inch piece of white insulated wire with your wire cutters. Remove 1/2-inch of insulation from each end with wire strippers. Slide one end of the wire under the screw you loosened in the last step and tighten the screw.

    • 5). Remove 1/2-inch of insulation from the end of the white lead on the wire coming from the light. Place the bare ends of the three white wires together, parallel to each other, and slip a wire nut over the end. Twist the nut to the right until the wires are secure.

    • 6). Loosen the top screw on the right side of the outlet. Remove 1/2-inch of insulation from the end of the black lead on the wire coming from the light. Slide the wire under the screw and tighten.
