What to Look for in a Webcam Before You Buy
- Like video cameras, the resolution can be standard or high definition. A webcam with HD resolution -- such as the Logitech HD Webcam C510 -- features 720p. Other HD webcams -- such as the Microsoft LifeCam HD-5001 -- features 1080p. The higher the number before the "p," the higher the resolution. You will want a high resolution HD webcam if you are concerned about image quality. For example, if you use your webcam for a lot of video chatting -- or for presentation purposes -- the higher the resolution, the better.
- When it comes to webcams, the higher the fps the better. Webcams should have at least a fps rating of 30 or higher. Webcams that have a lower fps rating will cause the video you are sending -- or receiving -- to be choppy. A low fps rating can also cause audio to be out of sync. The fps rating is often referred to as the video capture speed. When it comes to audio, make sure the webcam features echo and noise reduction, otherwise you will sound as if you're talking from inside a tin can.
- If you do not already have a microphone, purchase a webcam with a microphone built into it. This will save you the hassle -- and money -- of buying a microphone separately. Some webcams -- such as the HP Premium Autofocus Webcam -- feature face tracking technology. This technology allows the webcam to track your head movements while you talk. If you move left or right, the camera will move with you. If you tilt your head up or down, the camera will move with you. Other webcams -- such as the HP Webcam HD-3110 -- feature 360-degree full rotation technology, which allows the camera to record a 360-degree view from wherever it may be stationed.
- Before purchasing a webcam, make sure you have the appropriate system requirements to make it work. For example, while some webcams work with all systems, others only work with Windows XP or Windows Vista. The webcam box should tell you the system requirements. Also look into the warranty. While some webcams give you a three-year warranty, others only give you 90 days. Make sure the webcam features online support as well as telephone support in the event you should have any troubles operating it.
