MS Treatment

    Corticosteroids

    • There are various drug treatments used to help your autoimmune response, as well as manage any symptoms you may experience. According to the Mayo Clinic, corticosteroids are commonly used in the treatment of MS. They can help any inflammation that you may develop during a relapse (a reoccurrence of the disease).

    Interferons

    • Interferons slow down the progression of symptoms experienced with MS. According to the Mayo Clinic, interferons are only approved for sufferers who have relapsed MS and are still able to walk. Interferons cannot reverse damage suffered from MS, nor can the drug prevent any possible disability as a result of the disease. There are some people who can develop antibodies to interferons or even suffer side effects such as flu-like symptoms (nausea and vomiting). Interferons are usually recommended if you have more than one relapse a year or if you have the inability to fully recover from a relapse.

    Glatiramer

    • Glatiramer is used when interferons don't work well. Essentially, glatiramer blocks the nerve protectors from any attacks by the immune system. As a result, glatiramer can help prevent attacks of MS. The medication can cause side effects, though, such as flushing of the skin and shortness of breath after being injected.

    Plasma Exchange

    • In a plasma exchange, medical personnel extract some of your own blood, and then the blood cells are separated from the plasma. According to the Mayo Clinic, your blood cells are then mixed with a replacement fluid, such as a synthetic material with plasma-like properties. The solution is then returned to your body. The new plasma in your body can then slow down your immune system from destroying your nerves.

    Exercise

    • Exercising can help give you relief from mild to moderate symptoms of MS, as well as improve your muscle tone, give you added strength, develop balance and coordination, and help with any symptoms of depression as a result of the disease. A physical therapist can help you get started with simple stretching techniques and show you some exercises. One good exercise for MS patients is swimming.
