What Is Microtia
What is microtia? Microtia isn't commonly known because microtia isn't a common birth defect. Let me ask you this, if you saw someone without an ear would that be common to you? If this person was a child without an ear, what would you think. Well, that's microtia, the missing external ear or ear deformity. Microtia basically means congenital ear deformity. Microtia can show up in all different ways, but microtia is always about children born with congenital ear deformity. Microtia does not refer to any later years of ear deformity or external ear problems.
Microtia is the congenital ear deformity, the more common birth defect in boys than girls. Micortia can pop it's congenital ear deformity head up in a child that is born with no external ear(s). Micortia could affect one ear or both ear(s) of a child. A child born without an external ear has microtia. A child born with a severe ear deformity has microtia. A child without an ear canal has micorita. A child with all of the above, no ear canal, an ear deformity, and no external ear has microtia. A child with hearing loss due to no external ear has microtia. A child born with an ear canal with no opening to the external ear has microtia. A child with a partial external ear has microtia. A child born with an extremely and abnormally small external ear has microtia. So, you see all the ways that microtia can appear in a child? But, the main factor is the ear and hearing loss due to lack of ear formation before birth.
Microtia is a birth defect that can be fixed in most cases. If a child with microtia has an existing ear canal but hearing loss due to ear deformity, surgery can be performed for ear reshaping to improve hearing loss. If a child has no external ear due to microtia a substitute ear can be made. An external ear can be made of medical materials or an external ear can be made from cartilage taken from the body of the child and formed into an external ear. The same surgery can be performed to correct microtia in a child with a very small external ear or a type of ear deformity.
Microtia happens more to male children than to female children. No one really knows why microtia comes more for a boy child, but doctors have their hypothesis's about microtia.
I haven't seen anyone with microtia in my life until the last few years. But, maybe I did see people children or adults who were born with microtia and didn't know it because the surgery technology of today can repair microtia like a child was always born with an ear. I have noticed two boys in our community who have microtia and have been in-between surgeries to fix their external ears. One of the boys was complete hearing loss and was going in for his second surgery on his inner ear. Another of the boys didn't have hearing loss, but his external ear was having ear reshaping surgery.
