Different Shaped Double Headstones

    Rectangular Companion Headstones

    • The most common type of companion or double headstone shape is the rectangle. An artisan carves stone, granite and different colors of marble into a flat rectangle base with a rectangle standing on top of it. The vertical rectangle often features a curved top. The artisan can incorporate vases into the design on either side of the vertical rectangle, on top of the base to hold flowers. The face of the vertical rectangle may be plain stone with names, birth and death dates as well as a simple message carved into it. Or, it may feature a printed background or a photo of the couple.

    Heart Companion Headstones

    • Heart-shaped double headstones are another common choice for couples sharing a dual burial plot. A rectangular base can support one large heart or two hearts with a carved vase set in between them. The one-heart design is large enough to accommodate both names and lifespan information as well as a Bible verse, poem or passage expressing the couple's love for each other. A dual-heart design features one person's name, birth date and death date on each heart. An artisan can carve a message or phrase into or engraved upon a plaque affixed to the base of the headstone.

    Oval Companion Headstones

    • An oval headstone rises like a phoenix from a square or rectangular stone base. The oval may be vertical or horizontal and is large enough to accommodate the information for both people. Sometimes the artisan prints the last name in the middle or bottom of the oval, particularly in a horizontal layout. An angel or stylized teardrop shape frames oval-shaped companion headstones.

    Custom Shapes

    • In addition to the standard shapes, laser engraving has made it possible for many couples to create headstones that uniquely express their personalities and affection. Companion headstones can be fashioned into columns, pillars, obelisks, angels and even tree stumps. Some couples opt for a granite bench with their names and lifespan information as well as photos and a message printed on it. They have it installed above their dual grave plot.
