How to Replace a Gas Filter on a 2005 Ford Ranger Pickup
- 1). Locate the fuel filter on the Ranger. The cylindrical filter is inside the driver's side frame rail on the left side, underneath the truck. It is held onto the frame rail with a metal C-clip. The back of the filter has two lines leading from the fuel tank, and there's one line on the front that leads to the engine. Spray the fuel line connectors with a penetrating lubricant such as PB Blaster to loosen the nuts.
- 2). Raise the back end of the truck by jacking up the two rear wheels or backing it up on a set of ramps. This will give you more room to work when you remove the filter.
- 3). Remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse block. Attempt to start the truck to depressurize the fuel system. Loosen the gas cap to remove any residual pressure in the fuel system. Failure to depressurize the fuel system can lead to fuel spraying when you loosen the fuel lines.
- 4). Put on your safety goggles.
- 5). Loosen the nuts on the connections to the fuel lines leading to and from the tank, using the open-end wrench. The 2005 Ranger has two lines leading from the tank to the filter but only one leading from the filter to the engine. When the fuel line nuts are completely loosened, back them away from the filter with your fingers and gently wiggle the filter connections out of the lines.
- 6). Detach the old filter from the metal C-clip on the frame rail by hand and replace it with the new filter. Note the direction of the fuel flow on the new filter and install accordingly. Remember that the end with two lines coming out of it is the one you will hook to the fuel tank, so that end will face the rear of the truck.
- 7). Reconnect the fuel lines to the filter and tighten the nuts using the open-end wrench. Do not overtighten, or you could cause damage to the nuts and the fuel lines. Wipe up any spilled fuel on the ground. Start the truck and inspect for leaks.
