The Purpose Of An Extractor Fan

102 11
The main purpose behind an extractor fan is to remove odors, airborne grease particles, steam, heat, smoke, and combustible particles, from the area around the stove in the kitchen. In the United Kingdom these items are called an extractor fan or extractor hood and in the United States they are referred to as a range hood or a vent-a-hood.

An extractor fan is made up of the following three basic components:
1. A panel designed to capture the rising gases that may also be called an effluent plume
2. Filters to capture grease particles
3. A fan to force ventilation

When you purchase an extractor fan you will have the choice of two basic types. There is a version of these ventilation hoods that is vented and there is a version that is ductless and generally referred to as a recirculating variety.

The output collar on the ventilated varieties blower motor is attached to a duct that goes outside the building and releases the removed exhausts. These systems require the stove to be placed on an exterior wall or to have the duct system vented through the ceiling of the room. The drawback to these systems is the fact that they restrict the location of where the stove can be placed in the room.

The recirculating versions of these cooking canopies make use of a filtration system that the exhaust fumes pass through before being returned to the kitchen environment. These items usually have activated charcoal filters that trap the grease particles and foul odors before the air returns to the room. The biggest drawback to these types of systems is the fact that you must regularly change the activated charcoal filters to keep the system performing at its highest efficiency.

These devices were once thought of as luxury items for homes that were very expensive, but they are now common items that we see in almost every home regardless of size or property value. People have realized the benefits to be had from using these vents and one of these benefits is a reduction in fires inside the home caused by combustible particles being airborne from the kitchen.

Another thing that plays a huge part in the inclusion of these items in so many homes is the fact that the items have steadily gotten less expensive over the years. Where the items were once very expensive they can now be purchased in almost every price range.

Many of these items have lights included in them to provide more light to the surface area of the cooking station. The lights may be incandescent, fluorescent, or halogen. You will find these items now come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes to accent any kitchen decor.

The controls on these devices are generally electronic although you can find models that have electromechanical controls. Some of the electronic controlled models have remote control and motorized height adjustments combined with thermal sensors and overheat protection modes.

An extractor fan is used in a kitchen to remove grease particles, smoke, excess heat, and odors. An extractor fan is the same thing as an electric chimney. You can contact us for more information.
