How to Make a Blacktail Buck Lure
- 1). Place a jig head hook in the jaws of a fly tying vise. Position the bend of the hook in the vise jaws with the shank of the hook on top and the point on the bottom.
- 2). Wrap fly tying thread around the shank of the hook. Begin wrapping at the base of the jig head and wrap down the shank to the bend of the hook. Wrap the thread back up to the base of the jig head.
- 3). Pinch a clump of black bucktail hairs. Cut the hairs free with a sharp pair of scissors. Trim the cut end of the hairs straight with the scissors.
- 4). Place the cut end of the hairs on the top of the hook shank. Position the hairs so the cut ends are at the base of the jig head. Tie the hairs in place with several turns of fly tying thread.
- 5). Cut another clump of hairs, trim the cut end flush and place the hairs on the bottom of the hook shank. Position the cut end of the hairs at the base of the jig head and tie in place with the thread.
- 6). Finish the black bucktail jig by wrapping the hairs with several turns of thread below the jig head. Tie off the thread and cut it free from the bobbin. Apply a coat of clear nail polish to protect the threads during use.
