Lesser Known Traffic Tickets

105 15
In addition to the obvious ways to get a traffic ticket such as through speeding, reckless driving, DUI, or running a red light, there are many traffic laws that the average driver is unaware of but can still be penalized for. Claiming ignorance to the police officer is not an excuse.

It is illegal to have a child in the car who is not in a proper child restraint car seat or booster. The type of car seat needed is based more upon the child's weight and height than the child's age. A two year old who weighs twenty five pounds, for example, would need a different type of car seat than a two year old who weighs forty pounds. If drivers are stopped and have a child who is improperly restrained, they will receive a ticket. Parents who regularly drive with their children in the car have a responsibility to properly install a safe car seat. There are many resources that will check the installation of a car seat for free such as hospitals, fire stations, and police stations.

Cars that have an improper exhaust system can be ticketed by a police officer. The exhaust system includes the muffler and tail pipe. Many times drivers are ticketed because their car is unusually loud because of their muffler and breaks local noise ordinances. Cars must also be up to date on their smog or emissions testing to prevent any additional car pollution into the atmosphere. Drivers who are caught with expired emissions testing will face harsh fines and penalties.

Window tinting must meet state requirements, meaning that a certain amount of light must be able to penetrate the tinting. This is called Visible Light Transmission (VLT) percentage. In Washington, there must be at least 35% of light allowed in through the front side, back side, and rear windows. For the windshield, tinting is allowed on the top six inches of the windshield. When tinting is legal, there should be an identifying sticker on the driver's front side window.

Drivers have a responsibility to know the laws and follow them for their safety and the safety of other drivers.
