Recall on 4 million Bumbo chairs

More than 95 reports of babies falling from Bumbo baby seats has evoked a recall of more than four million baby seats from the markets.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), babies can easily maneuver out of the seats and fall, which could result in product liability.

Similarly in October of 2007, about one million of the seats were recalled in order to place additional warning labels on them. The new labels warned to not place the seats on top of high surfaces, such as kitchen tables and counter tops.

Bumbo International of South Africa and the CPSC have learned of at least 50 different incidents of babies falling from Bumbo chairs since the first recall in 2007. A reported 34 have fallen from either floor level or from an unknown height and a 21 skull fractures have been reported so far.

At such a formative age when babies' skulls are still not completely developed one would assume an impact could be quite detrimental. Usually skull fractures for infants can be rather benign but it is imperative to take them to an emergency room immediately and have all possible testing done in order to make sure no permanent neurological damage occurs.

The Bumbo chair is a made entirely of foam, which would seem ideal for infants, and is rounded and flat with a 15-inch diameter. The front accommodates for the legs to fit through while the middle front section is raised to and the back portion of the seat wraps around.

The company has asked for consumers to stop using the product and to contact the company. A free repair kit along with instructions on how to use the chair safely will be sent to consumers. Inside the repair kit will be a belt which consumers are told to put on the chair in order to keep children from falling. To order the repair kit, consumers can either call 866-898-4999, or visit www.recall.BumboUSA.com.

The company released a statement saying the addition of a restraint belt would enhance the safety of babies who use the chairs.

"The restraint belt will help prevent children from getting out of or falling from the seat when it is used as intended: on the floor with adult supervision and never on raised surfaces," the statement said. "The health and safety of children using the Bumbo Baby Seat are our top priorities."

There is currently about sixteen children items which have been recalled in the last calender year because of the risk of a variety of injuries.

If your child has used on of these products and has been injured it is important to contact an attorney who could help find compensation and make sure the personal injuries never happen again.
