Savannah Low Country Tours
- With a two-person minimum and a three-person maximum, tourists can experience Savannah and the surrounding Low Country from a helicopter with Savannah Helitours. Three different tours, covering 18, 30 and 50 miles, respectively, depart from the Savannah Airport. The shortest ride concentrates on the city and Fort Jackson, Georgia's oldest fort. The 30-mile tour covers these attractions, as well as Fort Pulaski and the Cockspur Lighthouse. Finally, the longest tour includes all of these sites and adds Tybee Island and the Wilmington River.
- The Bull River Cruises tour company operates the Island Express, a specially built boat that accommodates two to 22 passengers. A variety of narrated tours are available, lasting from 1 1/2 to four hours. You can spot wildlife like dolphins, pelicans, egrets and crabs on most of the trips, and some of the tours feature historical fishing villages, rice plantations or old cemeteries. One cruise takes place at sunset.
- Gray Line tourists board a trolley for a 90-minute narrated tour through Savannah, followed by an hour-long riverboat sightseeing cruise up the Savannah River. Trolley passengers have "hop on/hop off" privileges at 13 stops in the city. The trolley tours the historical areas of the city. Discounted tickets to many attractions are available on the trolley, and children between 5 and 11 years of age ride at a cheaper rate.
- If you come to Savannah more for the Low Country cooking than for exploration of the marshlands, the Paula Deen tour features lunch at Uncle Bubba's Oyster House, the newest restaurant owned by Savannah's favorite celebrity chef. Participants learn about Paula Deen's life and visit some of the sites important to her. Each adult guest receives a gift bag of goodies and a VIP pass to Deen's original restaurant, The Lady and Sons, which allows you to call and make priority seating reservations. You can book by telephone, but Internet reservations are cheaper. Children younger than five travel free. The tour picks up and drops off passengers from any downtown Savannah hotel.
