One of the easiest ways to give a bland bedroom a makeover is to add an attractive headboard. Regardless of whether the headboard is functional or purely decorative, it can turn your bed into an artistic centerpiece for your new stylish room. For the best results, make sure the attractive headboard is also comfortable if you lay back against it. - Make your headboard as tall as the wall and as wide as your bed to add a contemporary and earthy style to your bedroom. The headboard consists of a piece of plywood cut into three vertical sections that fit back together. Rich red mahogany varnish covers the first section, pale oak varnish covers the second and dark maple varnish covers the third. A coat of glossy clear varnish finishes each section to provide a rich contrast between colors.
- Add a modern touch to your bedroom with a homemade headboard that looks indulgent, but is cheap to create. The headboard consists of a rectangular piece of plywood five feet tall and as wide as the bed. Swirl-applied clear gloss varnish covers the black-painted plywood for a rich luster. Small, rectangular, black glass decorative stones trim the thin sides and top of the headboard for a sharp accent.
- Go with an unusual design to create a unique headboard that hangs from the wall instead of standing behind the bed. The headboard consists of a thin, long, dark wood shelf secured to the upper wall. A large, cream-colored linen bench cushion secures to each side of the shelf with the corner cushion ties and hangs down to provide a cushioned headboard.
- Cover up an ugly but shapely headboard with luxurious fabric to create a romantic centerpiece in your bedroom. The plush headboard consists of a simple, scallop-topped wood headboard covered with a thick layer of cotton batting. Rich lilac velvet wraps tightly around the batting to accentuate the curves of the headboard base. Thin, royal purple silk ribbon edges the sides and top of the design.
- Recycle a tall and thin decorative gate to create a shabby chic headboard for a twin bed. The headboard consists of a stripped gate as wide as the bed. A piece of plywood, two square inches smaller in diameter than the gate, is covered with batting and floral brocade fabric. The covered plywood secures to the front of the gate to create an attractive and comfortable headboard.
- Try a crisp grid pattern to create a cushioned headboard with a sharp style. The headboard consists of as many one-foot plywood squares as needed to build the tall piece as wide as the bed. Dusty blue ultrasuede wraps tightly around each batting-covered square. The squares attach to the front of a large, black-painted plywood board in a grid pattern. The plywood backboard can attach to the wall or to the bed frame.
