Composition

• Corian is the final product of a process involving polymethyl methacrylate, a plastic formed by the chemical reaction of acetone and hydrogen cyanide. Technicians add heat, along with other substances like sulfuric acid and methanol. Finally, a free radical method adds peroxides to form the polymethyl methacrylate.
  
  

Molding

• The plastic from the chemical process is in resin form, shaped as pellets or tiny beads. Technicians add colors and mold the beads using an injection molding process. The result is a solid surface sheet of Corian.
  
  

Properties

• Corian material is resilient, durable and non-porous. It has a low flammability level, as well as a low smoke toxicity. Corian comes in more than 100 colors.
  
  

Uses

• In addition to residential counter tops, a number of other applications use Corian materials. It is a common surface material in hospitals, the food industry and marine environments. Corian also forms furniture and displays.
