How to Check a Furnace Blower Motor
- 1). Turn off power to the HVAC unit to prevent injury due to moving parts. Flip the circuit breaker for the machine to prevent accidental powering on.
- 2). Open the door to the unit by lifting it off its hooks and laying it to the side.
- 3). Inspect the filters under or to the side of the blower motor for debris or dirt. If the filters are excessively dirty, replace them with the same filter model and test the machine. Clean around the blower using a vacuum to reduce dirt buildup. If noises or malfunctioning continues, inspect the furnace blower motor.
- 4). Inspect the belts on the motor for signs of damage or corrosion. Test the tension of the belts by pressing them with a finger. Belts are required to offer only one-half inch of give in either direction. If necessary, tighten the belt by turning the blower pulley. Replace the belts if damaged. Note the model number on the belt and buy the same from a hardware store.
- 5). Find the oil ports on the blower motor near the motor shaft and apply two to three drops of non-detergent oil into each port if there is a lot of noise.
