How to Create a Medieval Pillow

    • 1). Cut two pieces of decorator fabric into 16 inch square pieces.

    • 2). Place the pieces of fabric right sides together, and pin along three edges.

    • 3). Stitch the three edges of the fabrics together using a 5/8 inch seam allowance.

    • 4). Turn the fabric inside out and press the three stitched edges flat with an iron.

    • 5). Place the pillow inside the pillowcase, and turn a small 1/4 inch flap around the open edge toward the inside of the pillow to finish the edge. Place straight pins along the edge to close the flap.

    • 6). Add your tassel trim around the entire edge of the pillow, starting in the center along the pinned edge. The pillowcase you have created is approximately 1 inch wider on each side than the pillow. You will be pinching each edge, and then pinning the tassel trim on top of the pinched edges on the front of the pillow. Place the tassel trim in the center of the pinned edge of the case, take out the current pins on the turned edge and place them through both the trim and the turned edge. Move your way around the corners, by creating a pinched pleat at each corner, until you have pinned the trim to the entire edge. By adding the trim in this way, you will be pinching the sides to not only add the trim, but to create a perfectly fitted cover around the pillow.

    • 7). Stitch the tassel trim to the edges of the pillowcase to secure. Stitch two lines along both edges of the trim to secure.

    • 8). Cut the tassel trim once you reach the end, leaving an extra inch. Turn a hem on the end of the trim, flap it over to cover the opposite edge and stitch in place.
