How to Take off a Formica Countertop
- 1). Turn off the water supply line and place a bucket under the sink. Use a wrench to loosen and remove the sink trap. The bucket will catch any water still in the pipes. Loosen the water supply lines where they connect to the lines running up to the faucet.
- 2). Unscrew the clips holding the sink to the counter. Use a drill to unscrew the clips. Run the blade of a utility knife along the edge of the sink to break the caulk seal. While you have the knife out, also run it along the back edge of the backsplash where it meets the wall to break the caulk seal there as well.
- 3). Pry up the sink and lift it out. Set it aside.
- 4). Locate the plug to the stove top and pull it out. If it is a gas stove, locate the valve to the gas and turn it off. Disconnect the gas line to the burner only after you have turned off the gas.
- 5). Look under the stove top and unscrew it from the counter. Break the caulk seal and lift it out.
- 6). Look under the countertop in the corners to locate where the counter is connected to the cabinets. If you see screws, then the counter is screwed down. Use a drill to unscrew the screws. If you don't see any screws, then it was glued down.
- 7). Pry the counter up with a prybar to help lift it. You will need to give extra force if it is glued to the cabinets. Get someone to help you lift the counter off and set it aside.
