How to Make Easy Seasoned Croutons
Croutons are so easy to make and so versatile, and they're a great way to use day-old bread.
Eat them as a snack or use them to top salads or soup. Sprinkle them over a casserole before baking or crush and sprinkle over steamed vegetables.
What You'll Need
- 6 to 8 slices of bread, store-bought or homemade, about 6 to 8 ounces
- 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried leaf basil (or use other herbs)
- kosher salt
- garlic powder
Here's How
Heat the oven to 375° F.
If desired, cut the crusts from the bread. I happen to like the crust on croutons, especially if the bread is homemade, but it's a matter of taste. Cut the bread into 1/2-inch cubes.
Put the bread cubes in a large bowl. Toss with the olive oil and basil, coating thoroughly.
Spread the bread cubes out on a large rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle lightly and evenly with salt and garlic powder.
Bake for about 15 minutes, or until lightly browned and crisp, turning every 5 minutes.
