Vivitar 283 Instructions
- 1). Hold the unit so the "Vivitar 283" emblem faces you. Open the battery door on the right side of the unit and insert four 1.5-volt AA batteries.
- 2). Turn the unit over and move the power switch, located in the lower left corner, to the On position. Check that the Ready Light, located next to the power switch, glows orange.
- 3). Rotate the Calculator Dial, located on the upper right side of the unit, until the black notch aligns with the appropriate ISO setting. "ISO" refers to either your film speed or the sensitivity of your camera's digital sensor.
- 4). Gauge the distance from your subject and refer to the color-coded chart on the Calculator Dial. Note which colored partition your distance falls under.
- 5). Turn the Range Selector knob, which protrudes from the front of the flash unit, until the color from Step 4 shows in the small window at the base of the knob.
- 6). Note the f-stop, or lens opening, printed above the appropriate colored partition on the Calculator Dial. Set your lens to this aperture to ensure that your subject receives proper exposure.
- 7). Set your camera to the appropriate shutter speed for flash synchronization. Refer to your camera's manual for specific information on correct sync speed.
- 8). Slide the tab at the bottom of the unit into your camera's hot shoe attachment, located on the top prism of the camera body. Move the Lock switch above the tab to the right to secure the unit.
- 9). Move the adjustable head as desired. For bounce flash, point the head straight up or at a 45-degree angle. For straight-on flash, point the head directly at your subject or scene.

Look through the viewfinder, compose your shot and focus properly before taking your picture.
