103 34
We all "already know" that the internet is big.
And its flashy.
And it offers interaction like never before..
blah..
blah..
blah...
And we are so immune to hearing a new buzzword every week claiming to be the "next big thing".
"So why should I bother about Social Media" is what we all naturally think.
I am here to give you a few insights, why Social Media is not the "next big thing", but is already a "VERY big thing".
The Obama campaign has definitely made SMO a buzzword, but before we talk about SMO, I want to talk about Social Media.
Let me lay down some quick and startling facts: 1)Social Media has existed before the World Wide Web itself.
Shocked! "Usenet" was the social media of the early days.
People spoke about anything and everything, they posted stuff on boards and commented on them too.
Far before the Diggs and Facebooks of today.
2)Facebook itself was founded way back in early 2004.
So its almost approaching its 5th anniversary! 3)YouTube was the most searched term on Google this year.
4)Orkut and Facebook have been the in Top 10 terms on Google in many countries for almost two years now.
5)Google has recently added the "SearchWiki" feature on Google.
com (which is sacrosanct to Google), in an attempt to add "social features" to their search engine.
6)YouTube will over Google to be the No.
1 search engine within 4 years!! Shocked! That is how BIG social media already is.
There are many more such stats to prove how big and critical social media has already become.
Which is why it is already pulling budgets away from not only search engine marketing, but also from display.
Stay tuned, as my next article would be onSocial Media Optimization or SMO.
