Where Does Photosynthesis Occur in Plant Cells?
- Evidence suggests that chloroplasts used to live outside plant cells as bacteria. They then invaded a non-photosynthetic cell and became embedded in plant cells.
- A chloroplast has an inner and an outer envelope membrane in a plant cell. It usually has a shape that resembles a meniscus convex lens and occurs in specialized leaf cells. Each photosynthetic cell often contains 50 or more chloroplasts.
- Water and carbon dioxide molecules pass through chloroplast membranes. Chloroplasts also have pigments known as chlorophyll, which harvests light energy. They conduct photosynthetic chemical reactions and releases oxygen and sugar molecules through its membranes.
