How to Fix Yellow Discoloration on Popcorn Ceilings
- 1). Mix 1 tablespoon of mild liquid dish-washing soap and 1 cup of warm water in a small container.
- 2). Dip a rag in the soapy water and squeeze out the excess moisture. Too much water could loosen the popcorn texture from the ceiling and cause flaking.
- 3). Run the rag gently across the problem area to remove the yellow discoloration. Use minimal force so you don't damage the ceiling and worsen the problem.
- 4). Apply a special popcorn ceiling cleaner to the discolored area if common soap does not work. Depending on the product, you may have to mix it with another chemical or dilute it with water before application. Follow the directions on the product label closely to prevent any damage on the ceiling.
- 5). Buy a can of popcorn ceiling texture if you can't clean the yellow stain from the ceiling. The new layer of texture will hide the old discoloration and help it blend with the rest of the ceiling. Dip a drywall taping knife into the texture and spread the material over the discolored area.
- 6). Apply paint with a paintbrush over the newly retextured area, if necessary. Use the same paint color as the rest of the ceiling to help hide the patched area.
