How to Make a Fountain Using a Pot and a Spigot

    • 1). Select a flower pot or a cast-iron pot that's at least 12 inches in diameter and 8 inches deep for the fountain reservoir.

    • 2). Seal any cracks, holes or other areas where water could leak from the pot with silicone sealant. Allow the sealant to dry completely.

    • 3). Cut a 4-foot-long section of copper pipe. Measure and mark 1 foot from one end of the pipe. This is the depth line for inserting the pipe into the ground.

    • 4). Measure the height of the pot. Measure and mark the copper pipe a distance from the first mark equal to the height of the pot.

    • 5). Drill a 1/2-inch hole through one side of the pipe, 1 inch up from the line indicating the height of the pot. The hole is for the plastic tubing; if your tubing is thicker than 1/2 inch, adjust the hole accordingly.

    • 6). Solder the copper fitting to the end of the copper pipe that's farthest away from the line marking the 1-foot measurement. Coat the end of the pipe and the inside of the fitting with flux before soldering. Solder the spigot to the fitting so that the spigot opening is positioned directly over the drilled hole.

    • 7). Situate the pot in place for the fountain. Push the copper pipe 12 inches into the ground beside the pot. The spigot should fall over the pot.

    • 8). Install a fountain pump inside the pot. Cut a 3-foot length of plastic tubing. Insert the tubing inside the copper pipe, up to the spigot. Attach the loose end of the tubing to the spout on the fountain pump.

    • 9). Run the electrical cord from the pump over the side of the pot adjacent to the copper pipe. Dig a 2-inch-deep trench for the cord as it runs to the outlet. Cover the cord.
