About Seasickness

104 206

    Function

    • The human body functions best when in an upright position, with the center of gravity directly over the feet and visually in contact with steady surroundings. The symptoms of seasickness arise when the movement of the boat on the water confuses a person's visual references and the balancing abilities of the inner ear. The body can, however, eventually adjust on its own to the boat's movement within a few days.

    Types

    • The same symptoms an individual experiences during a bout of seasickness are primarily the same as with other motion sicknesses and for the same reasons. Some activities that can spur a bout of motion sickness include riding in cars or on trains, flying on planes, swinging, spinning around and even in a dance such as a waltz.

    Prevention/Solution

    • If a person is susceptible to seasickness they can take an over-the-counter medication called Dramamine before going on a ship or boat. However, in cases of severe seasickness, stronger medications may be acquired from a physician. There are medicated patches that can be placed on the body. These patches work for a longer period of time. An alternative treatment that shows promise is ginger capsules.
Other ways to stave off seasickness are:
Placing a finger over one ear, closing it. This stops the liquid in your ear that keeps you balanced from moving about.
Keeping your eyes fixed on the shoreline or horizon.
Keeping fresh air blowing on your face.
Using acupressure on the P6 point (three-finger width from the wrist on the inside of the arm).
Moving to the helm (front) of the water vessel.
      Drinking ginger tea.

    Misconceptions

    • Many times people think that because a ship is large they will not feel the effects of seasickness as they had on a smaller boat. It is true that some people have different reactions to different types of water vessels. However, seasickness most certainly does appear on large ships. It is also thought that it's better to have an empty stomach if you are prone to this condition and have an water excursion planned. The opposite is true. Eat something healthful and drink plenty of water, avoiding fatty or spicy foods.

    Warning

    • If you are taking other medications, check with your health care professional to make sure they do not conflict. Also, if you are on a cruise or larger ship and find yourself very ill from seasickness after letting it progress too long, the ship's health care professional may need to be called. A medication in injection form can be given to stop vomiting. Of course, most of the time it will put you to sleep. When you awake, a regular seasickness medication can be taken or a medicated patch can be applied.
